This is a mid Taisho era (c.1920) large rope weave kago (bag / basket). Very intricately made with thick hemp woven into a round basket with fitted lid. Very thick and durable, it was probably used to store ceramics to minimize any breakage.
It has been in storage for nearly a century and remains in fine condition. It does shed a bit. It measures 16" in circumference by 10" tall (40 x 25 cm) by 16" tall (40.5 cm) including the wooden base.
